The Rotunda (University of Virginia)

The Rotunda is a building located on The Lawn in the original grounds of the University of Virginia. It was designed by Thomas Jefferson to represent the "authority of nature and power of reason" and was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. Construction began in 1822 and was completed in 1826, after his death. The grounds of the new university were unique in that they surrounded a library housed in the Rotunda rather than a church, as was common at other universities in the English-speaking world. The Rotunda is seen as a lasting symbol of Jefferson's belief in the separation of church and education, as well as his lifelong dedication to both education and architecture.

The collegiate structure, the immediate area around it, and Jefferson's nearby home at Monticello combine to form one of only three modern man-made sites in the United States to be internationally protected and preserved as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (the other two are the Statue of Liberty and Independence Hall).

Renmin University of China

Renmin University of China (RUC, also known as the People's University of China) is a key university in China. The RUC's strengths emphasize the humanities and social sciences, however, the university also embraces disciplines in the area of natural sciences. The RUC is a comprehensive research-orientated university.
The RUC was established in 1937, during the resistance war against Japanese aggression. The University acquired its present name on October 3, 1950, which made it the first university to be established by the newly founded People's Republic of China.

Well-known educators including Wu Yuzhang, Cheng Fangwu, Yuan Baohua. Huang Da, and Li Wenhai have all served as president of the University. The RUC incumbent president is Professor Ji Baocheng, and Professor Cheng Tianquan is the Chairman of the University Council.

Since its establishment, RUC students and teachers have always endeavored to carry out its redoubtable injunction to "unceasingly strive to be always in the vanguard". The RUC shares a common fate with the Party and the nation. Through prudence, dedicated effort, active and practical exploration, the RUC has become an important teaching and research base in the areas of the humanities, social sciences, and management science in China. Owing to its efforts in spreading and popularizing Marxism in China, for its achievements in developing philosophy and the social sciences in China, and on account of its indispensable contributions to the cause of socialist construction and reform, the RUC is regarded as "A Standard in the Humanities and Social Sciences in China?ˉs Higher Education Sector".

With undergraduate education as the base and an emphasis on postgraduate education, supplemented by adult education courses and online learning, the RUC has formed a multi-dimensional structure and multilevel system in education and research. The RUC has a Graduate School which is responsible for the administration of postgraduate students, and RUC now comprises twenty-one schools of different disciplines (a Chemistry Department has been established for the near future creation of a School of Natural Sciences). The RUC also has a substantial number of research centers, fourteen transitional centers for post-doctoral fellows, and also a School of Continuing Education, a School of Education and Training, and the Shenzhen Research Institute. The RUC ranks first in three areas among all universities in China: there are six national research bases in fundamental disciplines in the literary arts; thirteen key national research bases in the humanities and social sciences; and twenty-five essential domestic disciplines are taught on campus, which places the RUC first in the social sciences and humanities nationwide.

The University of Warsaw

The most prestigious University in Poland is the University of Warsaw (though Krakovians will fight you to the death to defend their beloved UJ’s honour). Founded in 1816, the University may be young by European standards, but its existence arose out of necessity; with Poland partitioned by three empires, Warsaw was separated from the academic centre of Poland, Krakow, and needed its own academic institution to match that of the Jagiellonian University of Krakow. During the short-lived Duchy of Warsaw, the School of Law and the Medical School were first established. After Warsaw came under the Russian Empire's yoke again, Czar Alexander I permitted the Polish authorities to create a university in 1816, consisting of five faculties: Law and Administration, Medicine, Philosophy, Theology and Art and Humanities. The University quickly became the premier academic institution in Russian Poland, though it was closed and reopened several times by the Russian authorities, as the faculty and students tended to take part in uprisings. The University remained largely in foreign hands and limited in its activities until Poland gained its independence after the First World War, and the University was completely restructured into a modern Polish academic institution.

By the 1930s, Warsaw University was the largest university in Poland, and its level of education had reached a western European level. During the Second World War, the Nazi authorities closed all Polish institutions of higher education. Despite this ban, underground education continued on an incredible scale, and by 1944 there were more than 300 lecturers and 3,500 students attending the "Secret Warsaw University." Unfortunately, the Warsaw Uprising resulted not only in the physical destruction of the University, but in the loss of most of the faculty and students. After the end of the War, the University was reorganized once again, this time with the "help" of Soviet authorities. In December 1945 lectures were resumed in the ruins of the campus and the buildings were gradually rebuilt.

A liberal arts education is the heart of the undergraduate curriculum at Toronto, and the Faculty of Arts and Science has more students than any other faculty. The education of students for the professions has always been an important part of the University's role, and the University accordingly maintains a wide range of professional faculties. The University's insistence on the importance of research in all disciplines has made it the major centre for graduate education in Canada. In many fields it produces a majority of the nation's doctoral candidates. The quality and range of the programs - undergraduate, graduate and professional - attract students from all parts of the province, from around the country and from abroad.

To support its work of teaching and research, the University has collected a library that is the largest in Canada and among the best in the world. The University maintains many laboratories and specialized aids to research. The University of Toronto Press Inc. is the chief institution of its kind in Canada and one of the most important scholarly publishers in North America.

The University of St Andrews

The IT Services department at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, develops and maintains software systems used in a variety of capacities throughout the university.

I had several years of experience working with Perl when I took my first serious look at Python back in 1999. Our team's projects were becoming bigger and more complex, and it was obvious that we needed to bring to them more structure and clarity. I had been looking at Java for some time, but its potential benefits seemed to come at the cost of a steep learning curve, and an overall increase in development time. In contrast, Python appeared to offer the prospect of having both clarity and productivity at the same time. And if we ever needed to make use of Java's class libraries there was always Jython, an implementation of Python for the JVM. The increasing number of Python books being published testified to the language's growing popularity, and the number of available libraries was beginning to rival Perl's. This convinced me to give Python a try.

Al-Azhar University

(pronounced "AZ-har", Arabic: جامعة الأزهر الشريف‎; Al-?Azhar al-?ar?f, "the Noble Azhar") in Egypt, founded in 975, is the chief centre of Arabic literature and Sunni Islamic learning in the world and the world's second oldest surviving degree granting university. It is associated with Al-Azhar mosque in Islamic Cairo. The university's mission includes the propagation of Islamic religion and culture.
To this end, its Islamic scholars (ulemas) render edicts (fatwas) on disputes submitted to them from all over the Sunni Islamic world regarding proper conduct for Muslim individuals or societies (a recent example being the clarification and thus prohibition of female genital cutting). Al-Azhar also trains Egyptian government appointed preachers in proselytization (da'wa).
Its library is considered second in importance in Egypt only to the Egyptian National Library and Archives. In May 2005, Al-Azhar in partnership with a Dubai information technology enterprise, ITEP launched the H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Project to Preserve Al Azhar Scripts and Publish Them Online (the "Al-Azhar Online Project") with the mission of eventually providing online access to the library's entire rare manuscripts collection (comprising about seven million pages).
History
The university was founded by the Fatimid dynasty of Egypt, descended from Fatimah, daughter of the Prophet Muhammad. Fatimah was called Az-Zahra (the brilliant), and the university was named in her honor. Studies began at Al-Azhar in the month of Ramadan, 975 AD. The university (Jami'ah) had faculties in Islamic law and jurisprudence, Arabic grammar, Islamic astronomy, Islamic philosophy, and logic. In the 12th century, following the overthrow of the Shia Fatimid dynasty, Sultan Saladin (the founder of the staunchly Sunni Ayyubid Dynasty ) converted Al-Azhar to a Shafi'ite Sunni center of learning.
In 1961, Al-Azhar was reorganised under the government of Egypt's second President Gamal Abdel Nasser and several secular faculties were added to the university, such as medicine, engineering and agriculture. An Islamic women's faculty was also added in the same year, six years after Zaib-un-Nissa Hamidullah had been the first woman to speak at the university.

Islam Karimov had the religious center of Tashkent reconstructed (see photo of Hast Imam)

Reconstruction of Tashkent streets and squares for the Independence Day celebration on the national leader's initiative is a tradition in Uzbekistan. Central part of the capital around Chor Su marketplace and Eski Juva square was reconstructed in 2005. President Islam Karimov ordered the National Gallery of Fashion there rebuilt so as to resemble the famous ancient monuments of the Timurides era.

Road bridges and interchanges were built in Tashkent for the jubilee in 2006. This year, it is the turn of the religious complex on Hazrati Imam square also known as Hast Imam. Buildings of the XVI-XIX centuries were restored there and new cyclopean ones built in a matter of months. The scope, plans, and tempos of construction were determined by Karimov himself. The construction was practically over a month before the Independence
